Travel information

Conference location
The 2012 Berlin Conference on the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change took place in the Henry-Ford-Building (German: Henry-Ford-Bau, Garystraße 35, 14195 Berlin) at the Freie Universität Berlin, which is located in the Dahlem area in the South-Western district of Berlin-Zehlendorf. For orientation, please follow this link.

Please note: Due to construction work at the subway station „Thielplatz“, we suggest that you use the station „Oskar-Helene-Heim“ to get to and from the conference location. At „Oskar-Helene-Heim“, follow the exit signs in the direction of Garystraße. Cross the traffic lights on your ride side, walk about 650 metres and you will find the Henry Ford Building on your left side.

How to get to the conference venue:

Arriving by plane:
There are two international airports in Berlin: Tegel (TXL) and Schönefeld (SXF). Both airports can be reached by public transportation.
From Tegel Airport, take the Airport Express Bus X9 to Station “Jakob-Kaiser-Platz”. Change to subway line U7 (direction “Rudow”) until “Fehrbelliner Platz”. There change to subway line U3 (direction “Krumme Lanke”). Exit at “Oskar-Helene-Heim”.
From Schönefeld Airport, take the metropolitan train (S-Bahn, marked by green “S” signs) S 45 (direction “S+U Hermannstraße”) to Station “S+U Neukölln”. From Station “S+U Neukölln”, take line S 41 (direction “Schöneberg”) until “Heidelberger Platz”. There change to subway line U3 (direction “Krumme Lanke”) and exit at “Oskar-Helene-Heim”.

Arriving by train:
All trains arrive or stop at the new Hauptbahnhof (Central Station). From there, either use public transportation or take a taxi to get to your hotel. The section ‚hotel information‘ explains how to get to each hotel from the Central Station.
From “Hauptbahnhof” (Central Station), take the city train S 75 (direction “Spandau Bhf”) to station “Berlin Zoologischer Garten”. Change to the subway line U9 (direction “Rathaus Steglitz”). At the station “Spichernstraße”, change to subway line U3 (direction “Krumme Lanke”) and get off at “Oskar-Helene-Heim”.

Arrival
By public transport: from station “Berlin Hauptbahnhof” with city train S9 (direction “S Flughafen Berlin Schönefeld”) until stop “Friedrichstraße”, there change to city train S1 (direction “Wannsee”) until stop “Mexikoplatz”. From here you can walk to the hotel (about 2 minutes). Alternatively take city train S7 (direction “Potsdam Hbf) until station “Nikolassee”, there change to city train S1 (direction “Frohnau”) until stop “Mexikoplatz”.
By taxi: it takes you about 30 minutes from the airport to arrive at the hotel.

How to get to conference location
From the hotel you can walk to the subway station “Krumme Lanke” within 10 minutes. The second stop is “Oskar-Helene-Heim”. From there, within a 5 minute walk, guided by signs, you will reach the conference location.

The Best Western Hotel Steglitz International belongs to the group of first-class hotels. The subway station (U-Bahn) and a city railroad station (S-Bahn) are directly in front of the hotel. You can reach the conference site in about 30 minutes.

From the hotel you can take the Bus X82 to U-Dahlem Dorf, than change to the Subway for two stations to “U-Bahnhof Oskar-Helene-Heim” (U3 Service to “Krumme Lanke”) from where you can walk to the Henry-Ford-Bau within 5min.

Arrival
By public transport: From the central station “Berlin Hauptbahnhof” take city train S75 (direction “Spandau Bhf”) until station “Berlin Zoologischer Garten”. There change to bus number 110 (direction “Oskar-Helene-Heim”) and get off at “Platz am Wilden Eber”
By taxi: it takes you about 20 minutes from to arrive at the hotel.

How to get to conference location
The subway station “Podbielskiallee” (line U3) can be reached in a 10 minute walk from the hotel. After three stops (direction „Krumme Lanke”), you get off at „Oskar-Helene-Heim”.

The hotel is located in the district “Steglitz” close to the western center of Berlin. The beautiful “Botanical Garden” of Berlin is in walking distance of the hotel. There is a specialties restaurant and a nice little bar in the hotel. You can reach the famous boulevard “Kurfürstendamm” in only 15 minutes using the subway that stops close to the hotel. You can reach the conference location in 30 minutes.

By taxi: from the airport Schoenefeld in about 30 minutes.

How to get to conference location
At the subway and city train station “Rathaus Steglitz” there is a bus stop. Take bus X83 (direction “Königin-Luise-Str./Clayallee”) until the stop “ U Dahlem Dorf”. From there you can either walk to the conference location (about 10 minutes) or take the subway line U3 (direction “Krumme Lanke”) and get off at “Oskar-Helene-Heim”.

Arrival
By public transport: from airport Schönefeld take the city train S45 (direction “Westend”) until station “Heidelberger Platz”. From there, you can walk within a few minutes to the hotel (600 m).
From the central train station “Berlin Hauptbahnhof” take city train S5 (direction “Westkreuz”) or S7 (direction “Potsdam Hbf”) until station “Westkreuz”. There, change to city train S42 or S 46 (direction anti-clockwise) until stop “Heidelberger Platz”. From there it is only a few minutes to walk to the hotel.
By taxi: it takes you about 20-30 minutes from all airports of Berlin to arrive at the hotel.

From the hotel you can walk to the subway station “Heidelberger Platz” within a few minutes.  Take subway line U3 (direction “Krumme Lanke” and get off at “Oskar-Helene-Heim”. From there, within a 5 minute walk, guided by signs, you will reach the conference location.

If you arrive by train: do not travel until “Berlin Hauptbahnhof” but get off the train at “Berlin Spandau”. Change there to the Bus M45 (direction “Zoologischer Garten”) and exit at “Heidereutherstraße”.
By taxi: it takes you about 30-40 minutes from all airports of Berlin to arrive at the hotel

How to get to conference location
From the hotel you can walk to the station “Stresow” within a few minutes. Take the S75 (direction “S Wartenberg”) until “S Westkreuz”. Change there to the S46 (direction “Königs Wusterhausen”) until “Heidelberger Platz”. Change there to the U3 (direction “Krumme Lanke”) and get off at “Oskar-Helene-Heim”.

Single rooms, twin rooms and 4 bed rooms – all private and with shared facilities – are available. Single private rooms cost between 19,50 EUR and 30 EUR (ensuite). Breakfast is included.

Arrival
If you arrive by plane: From airport Schönefeld take the S 45 to “Bundesplatz”. Change there to the U 9 (direction „Rathaus Schöneberg“) until “Schloßstraße”. From airport Tegel take the bus X 9 to „Zoologischer Garten“. Change to U 9 (direction „Rathaus Steglitz“) and exit at „Schloßstraße“.
If you arrive by train:  get off the train at “Berlin Hauptbahnhof” (main station) and take the S Bahn (either S 5 or S 9) to „Zoologischer Garten“. Change there to U 9 (direction “Rathaus Steglitz”) and exit at “Schloßstraße”.
From the subway station „Schloßstraße“, it is a 5 minute walk to Happy Bed Hostel.

How to get to conference location
From the hotel you can walk to the station “Rathaus Steglitz” within a few minutes. Take the bus M 48 (direction “Zehlendorf, Busseallee”) and exit at „Thielallee/Dahlemer Weg“. Follow the Thielallee and turn left into the Garystraße. The Henry-Ford-Building will be on your ride side.
